FNH-USA tried to produce a shortened version of the SCAR-L to compete with the Colt MK18 (also known as the Colt M4 Commando) and the HK-416c. Due the shortened barrel, only 6.75" (17cm), the gas stroke is also became dramatically shorter, and as a result, the pressure from the round was not enough to cycle the bolt, making it jam easily.
The shortened barrel was so short that it made the 5.56x45mm NATO round less powerful and accurate than pistol ammunition such as the .45 ACP. The weight of the weapon was reduced dramatically, and as a result, the weapon was not able to handle the recoil of the 5.56x45mm NATO round.
As for a Personal Defense Weapon the FNH finally found that the P90 and SCAR-L CQC (Close Quarters Combat) were better in every way.
FNH-USA ceased production of the SCAR PDW and SCAR HAMR due to numerous issues with the weapons.
The SCAR PDW is a suitable carbine for close to medium range. The recoil is mediocre and possibly higher than the SCAR-L as it goes both vertical and horizontal axes. The SCAR PDW's damage is ideal for CQC but not good for medium range and longer, unless outfitted with a compensator. The ROF (Rate Of Fire) of this gun is low for a CQC weapon so it will be likely outclassed by most of the other CQC oriented weapons. However, the SCAR PDW has very good damage, which accounts for the low firerate. The SCAR PDW also has a very good mobility which the player can take the advantage of to flank enemies easily.
At close range the SCAR PDW performs quite well. It can eliminate an opponent with about 3 body shots, just like the UMP. The recoil is not a problem at this range, as the target is smaller than the recoil pattern.
At medium range and long range (over 100 studs), the recoil has a large effect on accuracy. The odd recoil pattern is hard to control for most players. Using a barrel attachment such as the compensator for these ranges is recommended, since it tightens up the recoil pattern, as opposed to the muzzle brake. It has a long TTK at medium to long ranges, as it takes 6 shots to kill. Tap firing is not very practical, as it is unlikely to kill someone from that range.
