A French magazine-fed .50 BMG rifle. Sure, you could shoot someone from across the map with this, but the bolt takes a long time to cycle, and the reload is by no means swift.
–In-game description

The Hecate II is a French Sniper Rifle available in Phantom Forces. It is unlocked at rank 150 or could be purchased using credits.

History[]

The PGM Hécate II is the standard heavy sniper rifle of the French Army, sometimes known as the FR-12.7 (French: Fusil à Répétition de Calibre 12.7 mm or literally translated to "12.7 mm Caliber Repeater Rifle".)

The Hecate II is chambered in .50 BMG (12.7×99mm NATO). It is produced by PGM Precision. The roots of this rifle trace back to the FR F2, which uses the weaker 7.62×51mm NATO ammunition. Similar handling characteristics with its smaller ascendant give it a very high degree of accuracy, comparable to other .50 caliber rifles, such as the AS-50 and McMillan TAC-50, and surpassing the Barrett M82 variants and M107.

In-Game[]

General Information[]

The Hecate II, much like other sniper rifles, can one-shot kill (1SK) to the head at all ranges, along with the ability to 1SK to the torso at any range, just like the BFG 50 and M107, along with dealing a large amount of damage to the limbs, and relatively large magazine capacity. Its muzzle velocity is also the second best in its class (and in the entire game), tied with the BFG 50 and the M107 at 3000 studs per second, only beaten by the Intervention's muzzle velocity of 3200 studs per second. Unfortunately, its large upsides are followed by equally large downsides. The Hecate has the second highest recoil of any gun in the game, even beating out the BFG 50 and only losing to the M107. In addition to this, it has a very slow aim down sights (ADS) time, the second-lowest amount of reserve ammunition for its class and a really long empty reload time.

Usage & Tactics[]

The Hécate II is best used at longer ranges, similar to many of the other snipers. It is handicapped at close range due to its lack of a 1SK to the limb at any range unless the enemy is slightly injured, unlike the TRG-42 or BFG 50, which have 1SK to the limb in CQC. Therefore the gun requires the player to be able to accurately hit torso shots or headshots due to the aforementioned fact that the Hecate is incapable of a 1SK to the limbs. The Hecate II also has the second slowest walk speed out of any other weapon in the game ( only beaten by the M107), so users might find it more convenient to switch to a secondary or their melee while actively being on the move to avoid getting shot or killed. It has a low RPM of 28, the second slowest in the game (BFG 50 and SFG 50 being the slowest at 16 RPM), and to add to the slow RPM, it also has a sluggish aim speed, meaning that missing shots can and will be punishing.

Similar to the M231 and Colt SMG 633, the Hecate II's recoil cannot be effectively mitigated to a satiable level with just attachments alone, but can be learned and controlled by the player with enough skill and practice. In a way, it is the antithesis of these two weapons, being so incredibly slow that it takes skill simply to continually score clean shots without getting return fire. However, since it is a bolt action sniper rifle with a slow RoF, the recoil doesn't matter too much.

Straight Pull Bolt is a option to put on the Hecate, as it removes the need to zoom out to cycle the bolt, allowing the player to continuously fire while still zoomed in. Lasers are also useful for assisting the player at targeting or for hipfiring when the player finds themselves in closer ranged fight, but that is not advised due to the Hecate’s extremely slow movement speed, aiming speed, and RoF. For attachments, sights are up to each individual player’s own preferences, and grips are generally advised against due to the fact that most grips, with the exception of Skeleton Grip, will only serve to worsen the Hecate’s already slow aiming speed. The Sagittarius 40x is a very powerful scope for players who choose to utilize the Hecate’s long ranged nature and universal 1SK to the torso as it allows for the user to zoom in extremely close to the enemy for an accurate shot. When combining the scope with .17 Incinerator and Heavy Barrel to achieve the highest possible velocity in the game (tied with the BFG 50 which also has access to these two attachments), in spite of now only killing to the head, the 40x magnification becomes far more beneficial when ranges get farther, as even the 40x setting sees very little bullet drop at most ranges. For a thicker reticle and a smaller magnification, there are a variety of scopes such as the ACOG or VCOG scope families that allow for a broader view. The Heavy Barrel attachment on the Hecate II increases the range and muzzle velocity on the gun at the cost of sacrificing even more movement speed, but this can be countered by moving while holding a secondary or a melee instead of running with the Hecate.

For those who are inclined to use the Hecate as a close quarters weapon, despite it primarily being a long range sniper rifle, can equip attachments such as the Short Barrel or CQC Barrel to allow the player better movement speed and aiming speed at the cost of range and muzzle velocity. Paired with the ammunition type Dust Shot, like the ones that the BFG and M107 have, allows the Hecate to shoot pellets instead of a singular bullet, turning it into a shotgun, and essentially killing all long ranged function on the gun.

While using the Hecate, the player is extremely vulnerable to an ambush due to the Hecate’s long range nature and is severely ineffective at fighting enemies at a close range. On that note, equipping a secondary, such as a machine pistol, that can effectively fight off an enemy at CQC is vital to the player’s survival, as well as being aware of one’s surroundings to prevent being ambushed.

Conclusion[]

The Hecate is an excellent choice of weaponry for players who prefer a longer ranged play style due to its high damage and universal 1SK to the torso, but that comes with a few major drawbacks, such as high recoil, extremely slow movement speed, aiming speed, and slow bolting cycling speed. There are many attachments available to assist the player in using the gun effectively. It is generally not a good idea to use the Hecate in CQC due to its slow RPM and low mobility which renders the player extremely vulnerable to faster guns like PDW’s and carbines. It is also advised to equip a secondary that can allow the player to fight back in CQC if need be. In general, the Hecate is a strictly long range oriented gun that requires much customization and extreme precision on the player’s part in order to successfully score a kill, with a few attachments being the exception and allowing for a more aggressive play style.

Trivia[]

  • When the Hecate was introduced into the test place, its third-person model was a two-tone grey and black Intervention.
  • The Hecate is one of two French weapons in-game, the other being the FAMAS F1.
  • The Hecate, along with the TRG-42 which has the scope unlocked by default, has a unique scope model, the Sidewinder ED.
    • The scope in real life is the Scrome LTE J10 F1.
    • This scope is also one of the scopes in-game that has scope lens covers. (the second being the FF 3X NV).
  • Despite the Hecate's recoil compensation measures in real life, such as the muzzle brake and its weight, which is supposed to reduce recoil to a level comparable to that of a .308 Winchester, the in-game depiction of the gun has very high recoil most likely due to balancing purposes.
  • The Hecate has a relatively unique reload animation for a sniper rifle, where the character taps the bottom of the magazine after inserting it, much like the MG36 and the SCAR HAMR‘s reload animations, as well as the Colt family and the TRG-42.
    • The TRG-42's reload animation is a sped-up version of the Hecate's.
    • The M107’s reload animation is a slowed-down version of the Hecate’s, albeit from a different angle at the right side instead of the left.
  • Attaching a Suppressor on the Hecate will make the gun have "damage rise,” which will increase damage at longer range instead of decrease, with 92.15 maximum damage and 93 minimum damage, similarly to that of the Gyrojet family.
  • The Hecate II is unlocked at rank 150, which interestingly unlocks 3 different weapons at a time.
  • The minimum damage model of the .416 Barrett ammo type is based around the Hecate II’s minimum damage profile specifically.
  • While fairly obscure, there are Hecate II rifles that have been converted to fire .416 Barrett (https://www.pgmprecision.com/en/sniper-rifles/custom-hecate-2/)
  • The Hecate II is tied with the BFG 50 for the fastest potential muzzle velocity in the game, at 7,200 stud/s when using Heavy Barrel and .17 Incinerator.
