A complex Russian assault rifle featuring a unique pulley-driven burst system. Fires two shots in the exact same place before recoil is felt.
–In-game description

The AN-94 is a Russian Assault Rifle available in Phantom Forces. It is unlocked at rank 10 or could be purchased using credits.

History[]

The AN-94 (Direlectly translates to: Avtomat Nikonova (Nikonov's Automatic Rifle), Model of 1994) is an assault rifle designed by Gennadiy Nikonov. The AN-94 was chosen over many other competing firearms in an extensive trial period, including the AEK-971 design from Sergey Koksharov. It was designed and manufactured at the Izhmash state factories and was designed to replace the AK74 Assault rifle. The rifle has a two-round burst mechanism that can fire up to 1800 RPM while it can only shoot at 600 RPM after the first two bullets in a fully-automatic fire. Such a high rate of fire (RoF) plus a unique delayed-recoil system means that the second round exits before the shooter feels any recoil. This means that the shots are placed within the gun's mechanical accuracy, resulting in a higher output of rounds at a greater accuracy than a conventional semi-automatic gun. In basic terms, during firing, the gas system, barrel, bolt, and bolt carrier move backward; all of them suspended and free moving in the housing. However, the bolt and bolt carrier move faster than the gas system and barrel, so the bolt can chamber and fire another round before the gas system and barrel reach the rear of the housing.

General Information[]

The AN-94 is not a typical assault rifle, given its unique two-round burst fire mode, firing at an elevated rate of fire (RoF) of 1800 RPM—the second-fastest fire rate in its class—but has a forced delay of 177 milliseconds between bursts. Assuming a user times the bursts correctly, the maximum effective fire rate one can achieve is approximately 1017 RPM. With full-auto, the first two shots are still fired at 1800 RPM but subsequent shots are fired at 600 RPM which is the second-lowest in its class, only ahead of the G11K2 in full-auto, and tied with the AK47 and AKM. A typical user will rarely achieve a consistent RoF using the burst mode, especially one at 1017 RPM; a typical RoF achieved would vary between 600-800 RPM.

Damage is average for its class, with a four-shot kill (4SK) up close and increasing to a 5SK at the end of its damage drop-off. The range is slightly below average, with a maximum range of 50 studs and a minimum range of 120 studs, meaning damage drop-off begins sooner than most assault rifles. Muzzle velocity is average for its weapon type, at 2500 studs per second. Time-to-kill (TTK) can be very quick despite the average stats, with a TTK rivaling that of the M231 assuming all shots are headshots up close and are fired at the aforementioned 1017 RPM.

Recoil is very low, having some of the best recoil statistics in-game. When using the two-round burst, recoil is extremely low with very little horizontal recoil and minor vertical climb. In full auto, after the initial two-round burst, the gun kicks upwards more with some minor horizontal kick and has increased visual recoil. Hipfire accuracy is average for an assault rifle, but the burst-fire nature of the AN-94 and lower full-auto RoF make it less effective compared to other weapons of its class.

Magazine capacity is average, at 30+1 rounds. Ammunition reserve is also typical at 120 rounds. Reload times are relatively good, with a tactical reload of 2.5 seconds and an empty reload of 3.2 seconds. Other handling speeds such as equip speed, aim speed, and walk speed are typical for an assault rifle. Penetration and suppression statistics are also average.

The AN-94 is one of the harder-to-use weapons, having a high skill ceiling. It depends on the accuracy and mastering the burst fire to maximize its effectiveness. With burst mode and with both bullets hitting, the AN-94 has a damage profile very similar to many designated marksman rifles, if not outright surpassing them in terms of raw damage. Assuming the user hits the first two shots at 1800 RPM in full-auto, the TTK will be reduced to 233 milliseconds (or 133ms with headshots). The burst mode fires two shots nearly perfectly on top of each other even at long range.

When using the burst setting on the AN-94, the weapon is best employed as a pseudo-DMR due to the weapon's ability to land two shots in extremely fast succession. The AN-94 can kill enemies with three bursts to the body or two bursts with headshots, which makes it very effective at medium to long ranges. Recoil is low enough that automatic fire at such distances also works relatively well, though burst-firing often yields better performance.

In close-quarters-combat (CQC), the AN-94 performs much worse despite a high potential fire rate. The forced delay between bursts can be punishing up close if mistimed, and its average damage means it is often outgunned by more powerful or fast-firing weapons such as the AK47 or MP5K. One could switch the fire mode to full auto to alleviate the issue if they feel that a close-quarters-combat (CQC) engagement is imminent, as in this mode even if you do mistime the burst, the gun will just continue to fire at a more sedate 600 RPM. Being able to still fire back is always better than suffering a "jamming" weapon.

As for attachments, an optical sight is rather beneficial. The iron sights are quite hard to use, and given the AN-94's strength at medium to long-range, a higher-magnified optic such as the ACOG or similar alternatives work well, although this will come at a cost of peripheral vision.

Recoil, although low, can be reduced further with the help of barrel and underbarrel attachments. The Muzzle Brake lowers the vertical recoil but adds some horizontal kick to the weapon. Otherwise, the Compensator is an overall better choice, removing any horizontal deviance in recoil to allow for better control when firing for longer periods. A grip further improves recoil control, with the Stubby Grip being best suited for this rifle. Additionally, as the weapon has low amounts of camera recoil, the Pistol Grip is a surprisingly solid option to clean up the AN-94's slightly above average rotational and translational recoil. Alternatively, the Potato Grip is quite great for guns with a burst mechanic as it decreases the recoil displacement, as well as similar buffs to the Angled Grip.

Ammunition types can be used with the AN-94 to some level of effect. Super Armor Piercing triples the bullet penetration, which synergizes well with strong ranged performance in burst, however it may require a user to land more shots, or to land exclusively headshots as it reduces minimum damage, forcing it a 6SK at all ranges to the torso (equates to requiring three "two-round bursts" to kill a fully healed enemy). The AN-94 has access to a special 7.62 conversion, putting it more in line with similar 7.62x39mm assault rifles such as the AK47 and AKM. While standardly increasing both damage and recoil to mirror these weapons, the AN-94 will gain the ability to kill in two direct shots to the head up to 63 studs. This results in a blazing fast TTK of 0.03s, giving it the fastest possible TTK in class.

Conclusion[]

The AN-94 is a highly customizable rifle that heavily values accuracy over RoF. While it is functionally unorthodox, the AN-94 is a very well-rounded weapon and is capable of solid performance at any range with its powerful hyper burst mechanic and amazing recoil.

Pros & Cons[]

Pros:

  • Extremely low recoil and spread.
  • Automatic mode has lowest default recoil out of any automatic in the game.
  • Good minimum damage - enables a 3SK to the head at any range, and a 4SK with one headshot.
  • Fast empty reload time for its class.
  • Very high burst rate of fire (RoF) (1800 RPM).
  • Burst remains at the start of each trigger pull, even in auto.
  • Delayed recoil from the initial burst, allowing perfect shot placement.
  • Easy to obtain since this weapon is accessible at level 10.

Cons:

  • Slow fully-automatic rate of fire (RoF).
  • Extremely underwhelming 2-shot burst mode.
  • Fully automatic mode includes the less-accurate 2-shot burst before automatic fire begins.
  • Unlike other automatic weapons where automatic fire can be stopped and started instantly, the AN-94's fully automatic fire takes a short time to restart, so that the user cannot spam the included burst.
  • Tiny, very obstructive iron sights.

Trivia[]

  • The AN-94 used the same sound effects as the FAMAS F1 before the 4th of July 2017 update.
  • The AN-94's magazine is angled to the right slightly, to be able to fit the ammunition feed mechanism.
  • The AN-94, the Kriss Vector, and the AK12BR are the only weapons to have a two-round burst fire mode in Phantom Forces.
  • There is a sign on the map Metro that features the old cropped version of AN-94, with text reading: "Use this gun or I will shoot you with it! - Kule".
  • The barrel reciprocates backward in the game just like it does in real life. However, when equipping any barrel attachment, the barrel does not reciprocate.
  • The AN-94 used to be fired in bursts without a cooldown, but patch 0.10.6 introduced a 400 RPM (150ms or 0.15s) cooldown between bursts. This was then increased to 500 RPM (120ms or 0.12s) (in patch 0.10.7/0.10.8) (Citation needed).
  • Before a recent update, the AN-94 did not have a semi-automatic fire mode.
